Paul Andrews, the original lead vocalist of the mighty heavy metal band Iron Maiden, passed away recently at 66. The vocalist on the first two albums of the band- Iron Maiden and Killers- went on to become some of the most important elements in establishing Iron Maiden as one of the powerhouses who led the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

Di’Anno’s Early Life and Journey to Iron Maiden

Born in Chingford, East London, 1958, Di’Anno was bitten by the bug of music pretty early on. He never did much as a teenager except play with bands – this while working as a butcher and then as a chef. However, all his life changed in 1977, when he met Steve Harris looking for a singer for his fast-emerging metal band Iron Maiden. Their sonorous voice along with Di’Anno’s presence made him fit the role and helped shape the early sound of the band.

Early Success with Iron Maiden

Iron Maiden had a distinct sound during the punk rock scene, and while they were not yet having much success in booking gigs, a demo tape known as The Sound house Tapes secured them some cult fame. When Di’Anno’s screaming went all the way down to business, they signed to EMI later in 1979 and the self-titled Iron Maiden was released in 1980.

This was their first record, but they could already express the punk energy in combination with heavy rock riffs. In the end, it was very influential, marking the beginning of an era for heavy metal. This brought it to number four on the UK album charts, and “Running Free” even landed them on Top of the Pops.

Killers and Departure from the Band

Killers is the second release by Iron Maiden, issued in 1981, with a much harder and sleeker sound. But only a year into its release and after a world tour, Di’Anno would leave the group. Di’Anno left Iron Maiden amicably and bore no grudges to the band or his successor, Bruce Dickinson. Di’Anno, in fact, spoke warmly of his time with the band, noting how they “looked after him very well” and that there was no animosity between them.

He continued to influence the scene of heavy metal with his raw, aggressive vocals when he left the band. Many of the giants of metal not least, Metallica, Pantera, and Sepultura look back at him as a big influential inspiration. He also continued performing as a solo artist as well performing with Gogmagog, Battlezone, Praying Mantis, and Killers.

Health Struggles and Final Years

Over the years, Di’Anno has faced some serious health issues. He suffered from lymphedema with really bad swelling inside his body tissues, allowing him to play only in a wheelchair. However, the current condition doesn’t prevent him from playing live shows. During 2023 and 2024, he played more than 100 gigs. People even managed to raise money for him to have crucial knee surgery in Croatia in 2022.

A Lasting Legacy

Di’Anno was pronounced dead by record label Conquest Music on behalf of his family. The group confirmed that he died at his home in Salisbury, but no official cause of death has been released. Former bandmates of Iron Maiden respectfully paid him their respects with the bassist Steve Harris saying “sadness over his passing while praising Di’Anno’s resilience, noting that “at least he was still gigging until recently.”

Iron Maiden’s statement honored Di’Anno’s legacy, acknowledging, Paul’s immense contributions were instrumental in shaping our journey and setting us on the path that has led us to where we are today. as a band for almost five decades. His pioneering presence as a front man and vocalist will be fondly remembered by fans around the world.”

Career Retrospective and Future Documentary

The Book of the Beast, a career retrospective album, was released just prior to Di’Anno’s death. This anthology featured some of the best material from his solo work and re-recorded versions of “Tomorrow” and “Wrathchild” as Iron Maiden cuts. Later this fall, a documentary film about Di’Anno’s life is set to come out that should tell a lot about this colorful life and career.
