Hurricane Milton Update: Florida Prepares for Category 5 Landfall

Hurricane Milton, a Category 5 hurricane racing towards the Gulf Coast of Florida, is carrying with itself destructive winds and life-threatening storm surges. Currently, it is centered about 630 miles (1,015 kilometers) southwest of Tampa, moving toward the east, packing sustained winds of 165 mph (270 kph). Landfall is expected later this Wednesday or early Thursday in the densely populated Tampa Bay area-a place that has not experienced the direct impact of a hurricane of this size in more than 100 years (WUSF).

Rapid Intensification and Threats

Milton has rapidly wrought havoc across the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, gaining an incredible 92 mph of wind speed in 24 hours. Among other things, this is due to a “pinhole eye,” which is but a small yet intense feature in the storm, together with the really warm sea surface temperatures in the area. The forecast is now suggesting that, if Milton weakens a little before making landfall, it nonetheless will pose some threat to millions of lucky ones who happen to make their homes on the way (Star Tribune).

Evacuation orders have been issued already by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in parts of Hillsborough County, including the area nearer to Tampa Bay all the way up through mobile homes, which are particularly susceptible to high wind and flooding.
Officials are worried that some areas might experience dangerous flooding due to a storm surge forecasted to reach 8 to 12 feet, already pushing the state into a state of emergency.

Preparation for Impact

Residents throughout the Gulf Coast-the region already reeling from damage left by Hurricane Helene only two weeks ago-are frantically reinforcing their homes and fleeing. Interstates are jammed with evacuation traffic as Floridians move to higher ground, and service stations in cities like Fort Myers and Tampa are running low on fuel. In Pinellas County-St. Petersburg is one of many cities included in the county-schools are being Prepared for use as emergency shelters

Meanwhile, the government has distributed federal aid, with 7,000 federal employees that have been deployed to help prepare. President Joe Biden declared a state of emergency in Florida to make sure that resources are in place for what could very well be one of the most destructive storms in recent history

What’s Next?

NOW, as Hurricane Milton is on its way, the state of Florida urges all people affected by the evacuation order to take all precautions to protect their lives and property; it’s a day to the landfall, and residents must prepare for the worse: the very next 24 hours will be critical in weathering this deadly storm.
